Ever since I can remember, I’ve dreamed of being an artist. And like other young artists, Disney was my first exposure to the possibilities. Then in the 60’s, psychedelic posters and hot rod art were probably my first exercises in seriously working from my imagination. Even in the military, I ended up a staff artist and photographer. My first practical experience was as a commercial artist, graphic designer and eventually a photographer. All of which was the foundation for the fulfillment of the original dream to be a fine artist. For the most part my commercial work was detailed pen and ink drawings. Because of this, the fine art I was doing occasionally tended to be loose and less structured. In the early 80’s I started working with oil pastels and it was during this time, work became more impressionistic. In 2002 I began doing etchings and fortunately my line of drawing experience came in handy for the initial project but before long I found myself exploring looser, less rigid techniques. I still prefer to work from my imagination. After so many years of creating images that had specific requirements, I really enjoy the freedom to create my own reality. Not that I don’t enjoy working from reality; that has its rewards as well, but watching an image develop from within you really is fascinating. My landscapes may be influenced by the desires to escape, be somewhere quiet and unhurried. My favorite pieces are always the ones that have nothing much going on in them; just open space and an inviting path to nowhere in particular…
